STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team spent the weekend at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship being held at Yale University. UConn sent five student-athletes to this year's tournament.
"This was a good event for our players, since it features the best players from the entire east coast region," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "We were able to get a win in the qualifying round, and each of the main draws in singles and doubles. All of our players competed at a high level, and will gain valuable experience from the level of competition."
In the main singles draw, senior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) lost her opening match to Marija Curnic of Brown in three sets, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-1. In the qualifying bracket, senior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) won her opening match over Sarah Campbell of Cornell but lost her bid at getting into the main draw, falling to Lily Burchell of Boston University.
In doubles play, the team of Lazaro and sophomore Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) won their opening match by beating Brown's Reddy and Cosme, 8-4. The duo lost in the next round to Seton Hall's Taal and Maston, 8-4.
The Huskies will host their lone dual match of the fall on Wednesday when the Quinnipiac Bobcats come to Storrs for a 2:30 pm match-up.
