Huskies garner two on All-Conference team
STORRS, Conn.—The UConn women's cross country team traveled to New Orleans, La. to compete in the American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday, Oct. 25. For the second year in a row the Huskies garnered 'Freshman of the Year' honors, which was awarded to Jaclyn Gallery.
As a team UConn finished fifth overall (23:27.79) and was led by Gallery, who finished first for the Huskies and fifth overall with a time of 22:51.52. She was followed quickly by sophomore Mia Nahom at 22:59.31, who finished ninth overall. The pair are All-Conference members, which is awarded to the top-15 finishers, with this marking Nahom's second time nabbing this honor. The duo also scored UConn 14 points.
"I'm very proud of Jaclyn and Mia for respective finishes and garnishing All-Conference honors," said Head Coach J.J. Clark. He continued, "This is the second consecutive year for Mia, in a very competitive field. I am delighted for Jaclyn being an All-Conference selection and Freshman of the Year, this is the second year that UConn has had that honor."
Three more Huskies rounded out the top-30 and provided UConn with 75 additional points. Senior Ericka Randazzo concluded the race with a time of 23:41.48 and in 22nd position. Sophomore Brianna O'Brien followed closely behind in 23rd position at 23:44.79. Senior Susan Anneo was the 30th runner overall at 24:01.84.
Freshmen Randi Burr (24:04.24) and Sarah Leatherwood (24:12.14) both finished just shy of the top-30 runners at 32nd and 35th respectively.
"We didn't get the result we wanted but we had to overcome a lot this year due to various injuries of our other All-Conference performers from last season. However, I am very proud of the all the effort everyone has put in. We are looking forward to resting our runners and preparing for the regionals."
UConn women's cross country team will travel to Amherst in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday, Nov. 9 to contend in the NCAA Regionals.
