STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team put the finishing touches on their 2018 fall campaign over the weekend competing against the Bulls and Rutgers in a blind dual match format.
"The fall season turned out to be very successful for our team," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "We had three strong returning seniors in Jacqueline Lazaro, Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph, and Gillian Perrotta who led by example on and off the courts. We also introduced three new players to collegiate competition, and they all performed extremely well."
Up in Buffalo this weekend, senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) put the finishing touches on a solid fall season, going 2-0 in singles play with wins over Buffalo's Sanjana Sudhir, 6-3, 7-6 (4) and Rutgers' Jaci Cochrane, 6-3 and 6-1. The senior ends the fall season on a six-match winning streak, owning an 8-2 record.
In doubles, she has partnered with freshman Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) to play to a team-best 10-6 record this fall. The duo opened their successful fall run with a title at the season opening Quinnipiac Invitational. Bou and Perrotta both claimed a share of the B Doubles Flight. Bou was also impressive in singles play this fall, playing to a 9-5 mark and was able to capture her first collegiate individual title, sharing the B Flight trophy at the Army West Point Invitational with classmate Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec)
Senior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) picked-up a singles win this weekend, beating Kat Muzik of Rutgers in three sets, 7-5, 2-6 and 6-2. She teamed up with junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) for a pair of doubles victories. The duo beat Buffalo's Emel Abibula and Sudhir, 6-3, and the team of Sydney Kaplan and Kristiana Zahare from Rutgers, 6-4. Chung finished the fall with eight wins in doubles play.
Sophomore Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up a singles win on the weekend, beating A. Paules Aldrey of Buffalo in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, and 7-6 (0). She finished up her fall with a solid 8-2 mark in singles play. Freshman teammate Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) also ended her fall with a victory, beating Isabella Da Silva of Rutgers in three sets, 6-3, 1-6 and 6-3. The duo shared an individual title this fall, capturing the D Flight at the Quinnipiac Invitational then teamed to share at the B Flight doubles title at the same event with teammates Bou and Perrotta.
"The team captured multiple individual flight championships in both singles and doubles, at the Quinnipiac and Army Invitational,"commented Marshall. "In our only dual match of the season, we rose to the occasion against in-state rival Quinnipiac with a dominating 6-1 win. And in our regional championships, we sent five players who all qualified for the prestigious event."
"I'm very happy of their accomplishments this past fall, and am very excited for what will surely be an exciting spring season."
