STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team will open up the 2019 spring season this weekend when they head to Hanover, N.H. for a set of dual matches against Brown and Dartmouth. Saturday's match is set for 3 pm while Sunday's will begin at 12:30 pm.
"We went into our winter break with a lot of strong results from our fall tournaments," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "All of our players got valuable match experience, and we were able to win some singles and doubles titles along the way. The teams then went home and worked hard to prepare for our upcoming spring season, faced with a very challenging and difficult schedule of matches."
The Huskies have 18 dual matches slated for the spring leading up to the annual American Athletic Conference Championship tournament. UConn will meet five AAC foes throughout the spring season. The Huskies will travel to Memphis and ECU where they will face the Pirates and Cincinnati and host Temple and Houston. UConn played one dual in the fall, beating Quinnipiac at home, 6-1.
Prior to classes starting, the Huskies took a trip to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, FLA. to train for the upcoming season.
"The most important matches on our schedule are definitely our conference matches, with Temple, Cincinnati, and East Carolina being some of our biggest rivals," said Marshall. "In addition to those, we have an extremely competitive schedule with national levels teams from the Ivy League, Big Ten, and several other strong conferences but we look forward to the challenge of working hard every day, and showing our fight and effort in every match we play."
This fall, the Huskies as a team posted a 48-36 singles mark (.571) and where led by freshman Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) who had a strong start to her collegiate career, racking up nine singles wins. Senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had a strong fall posting an 8-2 singles mark while teaming up with Bou to post a 10-6 doubles mark, a team-best record. Sophomore Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, FLA.) was also 8-2 this fall. Junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) and senior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) posted five doubles wins as a team in the fall semester.
"The team is led by our three outstanding seniors, Perrotta, Lazaro and (Jacquelyn) Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.), their leadership and talents will be an important part of our success this season," said Marshall.
