UConn opens November with rematch against Florida opponents

Huskies split matches back on Oct. 12 and 14
STORRS, Conn.—The Huskies voyage back to Gampel Pavilion to face their fellow American Athletic Conference members, from the sunshine state. When UConn took the trip down to Florida back on Oct. 12 and 14, the Huskies split the matches with the University of South Florida and Central Florida. While in Florida, UConn took on USF first in Tampa followed by UCF in Orlando. The order will be reversed for this week's rematch, with the UCF match taking place on Thursday and USF on Saturday.
Marketing promotions for this week are: Throwback Thursday--featuring everyone's favorite throwback hits and an Alumni Reunion on Saturday, all alumni are welcome back for a special day honoring former players.
Thursday, Nov. 1st
UConn (11-13, 3-8 AAC) will look to bounce back in this rematch against the UCF Knights (20-3, 11-0), this time on their home court of Gampel Pavilion. Back on Oct. 14th the Knights emerged victorious 3-1 over the Huskies, but not without a fight from UConn who tabbed the opening set with a score of 25-18. In that same set the Huskies' hitting percentage was .429 with 16 kills. The three freshman; Kennadie Jake-Turner, Caylee Parker, and Anna Petrova, posted kills of 11, 10, and nine respectively. Isabelle Peterson ended the match with three service aces and several blocks. The Huskies contested every set after while pushing the match into four sets; set two—19-25, set three—16-25, and set four—16-25.
Currently the Knights are riding a 17-game winning streak with 12 wins at home, but are 5-2 on the road. As a refresher, UCF returned nine players and added six; one senior, three junior, and five sophomores. The Knights' coaching staff is led by Head Coach Todd Dagenais, he is assisted by Associate Head Coaches Brian Doyon and Jenny Maurer. UCF is No.1 in the AAC.
Saturday, Nov. 3rd
The Huskies took the USF Bulls to five sets back on Oct. 12th and evened the overall series at 10-10 with this 3-2 victory. UConn battled back to take the win after falling behind two sets. As a team UConn finished the match leading USF in four of six categories; points (82), kills (69), assists (67), and digs (59). Parker posted or her fourth, at that time, 20-plus kill match leading both teams in this category as well as 13 digs. Seniors Iman McGary and Danielle Cabel contributed 12 and nine kills respectively, to the UConn effort. Seniors Emma Turner and Elizabeth Kline in addition to redshirt-freshman Courtney Morris had a combined 62 assists. Kline, Parker, and Turner collectively posted 40 digs.
Currently, the Bulls (17-7, 6-5 AAC) and are on a three-game winning streak. USF brought back 11 of their student-athletes and added six to the 2018 roster, with only six upperclassmen. The Head Coach is Courtney Draper who is assisted by Benavia Jenkins, Caleb Sibert, and Mitchell McPartland. In the AAC, the Bulls sit at No.6, several places ahead of the Huskies.
This past week in Husky volleyball…
The Huskies took on The Shockers of Wichita State and The Golden Hurricane of Tulsa on Oct. 26th and 28th. Although UConn went 0-2 over the weekend, the Huskies nabbed more kills (40) and assists (38) against The Shockers on Friday night. At Tulsa, UConn tabbed more service aces with nine, a season high as a team. Parker led the offensive charge for the Huskies with 17 total kills and was aided in that endeavor by Jake-Turner (10) as well as McGary (9). McGary set a season high in the match for aces at four. Several UConn volleyball players ended the match with double-digit digs in Kline with 17, McGary with 13, and Turner with 13.
