Strong Singles Play Leads Huskies at Viking Invite

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The UConn women's tennis team spent the weekend at the Cleveland State Viking Invitational taking on the host Vikings, Akron and Bowling Green. The Huskies finished the weekend piling up a 12-9 record in singles matches and were led by senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, Fla.) who each played to a 3-0 record over the weekend.
Kozyi had a 6-0, 6-3 win over Cleveland State's Lauren Longo and an 8-1 win over Alexis Steer of Akron. She closed out her weekend with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Laura Silveira of Bowling Green on Sunday.
Perrotta won a pair of two-set victories over Akron's Luisa Echeverry, 6-4 and 6-4, and CSU's Blanche Lenoan, 6-1 and 6-2. On Sunday, she posted a three-set win over Bowling Green's Ayumi Sasaki, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (2) to finish off a perfect weekend in singles.
The senior was also impressive in doubles play where she teamed with freshman Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) to go 3-2 on the weekend. The duo earned wins over the Bowling Green team of Polina Radeva and Sasaki, 6-3, the Akron team of Echeverry and Alexis Steer, 6-3, and the Cleveland State team of Sian Payne and Lara Prosenjak, 6-0.
Bou posted a 2-1 mark in singles play over the tournament, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Akron's C. C. Rosas Garcias and Cleveland State's Gaby Schoenberg in three sets, 5-7, 6-2 and 1-0 (9). Senior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) went 2-0 in singles matches, beating Akron's Pedroso, 6-3 and 6-4, and winning a three-set battle with Bowling Green's Marta Bettinelli, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3).
The Huskies will move on to the annual ITA Northeast Regional Championship next weekend being held at Yale University.
