STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team ended the 2018 regular season in disheartening fashion, dropping a 2-1 decision to Tulsa Friday night at Hurricane Stadium.
Despite controlling the first half (13-6 shot advantage), the Huskies couldn't carry that dominance into the second half – recording just two shot attempts in the second session.
The first half was an up-tempo affair, as both teams were able to get up and down the field for the majority of the opening 45 minutes of play. After two early attacks by the UConn offense – an Abdou Mbacke Thiam shot that hit the outside of the net (14:01) and an Ibrahima Diop attempt that missed wide left (20:07), the Huskies were finally able to break through in the 25th minute.
After receiving the ball out on the right flank, Dayonn Harris sent a cross over to the left side of the field. Following the initial deflection inside the box, the loose ball found its way over to Abdou Mbacke Thiam who punched it in from about two yards out, giving UConn a 1-0 lead. The Huskies held the one-goal lead heading into the intermission.
Unfortunately, the tide began to turn in Tulsa's favor, as they held a 5-2 shot advantage in the second half. The Golden Hurricane found the equalizer after cashing in on a penalty kick in the 65th minute. Three minutes later, Chase Bromstedt converted on a left foot volley to give Tulsa a 2-1 advantage with just over 20 minutes left to play.
The Huskies had two chances to find an equalizer, but an Ibrahima Diop free kick from outside the box (68th) sailed high and freshman Arthur Silva's shot attempt in the 71st minute missed wide left.
UConn was unable to muster anymore attempts at tying the game as Tulsa played a game of keep away to run out the clock.
