Providence, R.I. – Junior Briana Colangelo recorded two goals in the third period and UConn used a strong defensive effort in front of junior goaltender Morgan Fisher to post a 2-1 road win over the No. 8 Providence Friars Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.
The Huskies pick up their second win in the last three games and head into the winter break with an 8-9-1 overall record and a WHEA mark of 4-7-1. Providence drops to 13-3 overall and 9-2 in WHEA action.
UConn's defense allowed just 22 shots on goal in front of Fisher and kept Providence off the board in the final period. The Huskies killed both of the Friar's power play opportunities while converting one out of three of their own attempts.
After the first 20 minutes of action went scoreless, the Friars took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Meaghan Rickard at 6:34 in the second frame. The Huskies found the equalizing goal 1:45 into the third period, and then took the lead on a go-ahead goal at the 8:38 mark. UConn's defense amped up over the final 10 minutes and stuffed every Providence attempt to send the game into extra time.
1st Period:
The first period featured little offense as the teams combined for just 11 shots-on-goal through the opening frame. Morgan Fisher made five saves in the first period, while Madison Myers recorded six.
2nd Period:
The inter-conference matchup began to get more physical in the second period – six penalties, three on each team, were called over the course of the 20-minute time frame.
After both teams were whistled for penalties, Pickard put the Friars out in front, 1-0, at the 6:34 mark, stealing a pass and scoring a breakaway goal by backhanding a shot past Fisher's glove.
3rd Period:
UConn came out firing in the final period, scoring the equalizer just two minutes into the third. Kayla Mee fired a wrister from the center point that got deflected wide, by Colangelo was there to clean up the rebound, netting a backhand goal to tie the game at 1-1 at 1:45
The Huskies tallied the go-ahead (and eventual game-winning) goal at the 8:38 mark following a shot from Morgan Wabick that was initially blocked but deflected off the heel of Colangelo and trickled behind Myers to give UConn a 2-1 lead.
