Rowing Competes in Eastern Sprints on Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. - The UConn rowing team competed in the 45th annual Women's Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday, earning a fifth-place finish in the Third Varsity 8+ and silver medal in the Third Varsity 4+.
In the final race before the American Athletic Conference Championship on May 12 in Cherry Hill, N.J., the Huskies raced against some of the country's premiere rowing programs in the Sprints - recording six top-10 finishes out of seven competing boats.
"As expected, we saw very fast crews at the Eastern Sprints," said head coach Jennifer Wendry. "I feel we underperformed in some events, which is disappointing because we train so much for so few opportunities to compete. When we have the chance to compete, we ask that they put their best race together."
The Third Varsity 8+ finished in a time of 7:34.60, good for fifth among the field. The Third Varsity Four earned a program-best second-place finish (8:30.23), four seconds better than Rutgers and 14 second faster than Temple - a pair of teams the Huskies have raced earlier this season.
"I've been really happy with our progress this spring until this afternoon's racing. We did have a few boats compete well, particularly the Third Varsity 4+, but what we're looking for is solid performances across the board," said Wendry.
The Second Varsity 8+, Fourth Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 4+ also notched top-10 finishes in the Sprints. The Huskies prepare for final exams this week and are off next weekend, before returning to Cherry Hill for the AAC Championships.
"I'm happy we have two weeks to train leading into the conference championship, as we really need to focus on fine-tuning technique and our mental approach to racing," said Wendry.
