EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team faced their third American Athletic Conference opponent on the season on Friday taking on the Memphis Tigers. The Huskies came up short, falling 6-1 to the Tigers at the East Hartford Tennis Club.
UConn falls to 9-8 overall and 0-3 in the AAC while Memphis is now 13-7 and 3-3 in conference matches.
"Tha was a tough Memphis team that really played well indoors and that suprised us a little bit thinking they would be used to the outdoor elements," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "They were just a little bit tougher than us in a few spots. We had some scores that didn't really reflect how close the sets were."
UConn got a doubles win from the No. 1 team of senior Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and junior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) who beat Laura Bente and Alisha Reayer, 6-4.
In singles play, the Huskies picked-up their lone point in the match with a win by senior Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) at No. 3 in three sets. Walker won the first set 6-2 over Bente but dropped the second 7-5. She rebounded in the third to take the tie-breaker 10-8.
"I'm pleased with the way we played and Summer had a great win over a really good player at No. 3; a really solid quality win for her. Our No. 1 doubles played one of their best matches of the year. Overall, we had some chances but fell a little short."
"This is a good southern team in our conference and will be in the top-half of our league," stated Marshall. "This is a good quality opponent who will tune us up for tomorrow against BU on Senior Day."
The Huskies will host Boston University on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day and honor Pletnyeva, Walker and Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.). The match will be held at Magic Lincer Tennis Academy in Manchester.
