Conway, S.C. -- The UConn baseball team dropped its NCAA Tournament opener to Washington, 7-1, on Friday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.
UConn got off to a great start with an RBI single from Isaac Feldstein after Prato and Susi reached in the first. Prato singled and Susi extended his reach-base streak to 46 games with a walk.
The bats went quiet for the Huskies after that with just two base runners until UConn threatened in the seventh. Meanwhile, starter Mason Feole pitched well for the Huskies with seven quality innings that featured six strikeouts. Feole danced around trouble in both the third and seventh inning.
Christian Jones led off the third with a triple but was left stranded after the southpaw coaxed a ground out to third and notched back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Up 2-1 in the seventh, Washington placed runners at first and second but could not capitalize against the UConn ace. Feole retired the next three batters to keep UConn in striking distance.
The Huskies put a rally together in the bottom of the seventh with Chris Winkel and Christian Fedko singling to put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. A 5-4-3 double play on the next pitch ended the threat.
Washington put the game away with five runs in the eighth after UConn struggled to make plays in the field.
UConn faces an elimination game vs. Coastal Carolina/LIU Brooklyn at noon on Saturday.
Notes
Mason Feole notched six strikeouts on Friday to build his season total to 120. Feole is only the second pitcher in UConn history to record 120 strikeouts in a single-season. (Colin McLaughlin, 138 In 1979).
Anthony Prato recorded his team-leading 24th multi-hit effort this season with a pair of hits on Friday.
The loss snaps a two-game win streak for UConn in NCAA Tournament openers. The last time UConn lost the opener was in 2011 vs. Coastal Carolina. The Huskies rebounded and won their next four games to win the 2011 Clemson Regional.
