STORRS, Conn. – The No. 1 UConn field hockey team opens the 2018 season with a pair of games in Evanston, Ill., this weekend. The Huskies will face No. 12 Northwestern at 1 p.m. ET on Friday before taking on No. 15 Stanford on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

Huskies Go Undefeated, Win Fifth NCAA Championship
UConn is coming off a 23-0 season, which resulted in the program's fifth NCAA Championship. The coaching staff was selected as the NFHCA National Coaching Staff of the Year and five Huskies earned All-America honors. Charlotte Veitner earned the 2017 Honda Award for field hockey.

UConn Named BIG EAST Favorites
For the ninth straight season, the Huskies were predicted to finish first in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll. UConn has won five straight BIG EAST titles and are on a 25-game regular season win streak in conference play, dating back to 2013.

Senior Amanda Collins and junior Svea Boker were named preseason All-BIG EAST. Collins, also captain for the upcoming season, was tabbed preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Huskies Ranked No. 1 to Begin Year
UConn opens the 2018 slate as the preseason Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Huskies will face 10 squads also ranked in the poll this year, including two this weekend.
Scouting the Opponents
Northwestern went 15-7 in 2017, making an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Wildcats return 18 players from last season, including four of their top five goal scorers. Puck Pentenga led Northwestern last season with 17 assists and 39 points. Last season, the Huskies beat the Wildcats, 7-0.

Stanford went 13-8 last season, falling in the NCAA first round. The Cardinal returns Corinne Zanolli, who lead the team with 14 goals and 39 points in 2017. Last year, UConn defeated Stanford, 2-0.
