No. 1 Huskies Open Season With Win Over No. 12 Northwestern, 4-2

EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Jessica Dembrowski and freshman Karo Kueskes each scored twice to lead the No. 1 UConn field hockey team to a season-opening 4-2 win over No. 12 Northwestern Friday at Lakeside Field.

Junior Svea Boker finished the game with three assists while junior Antonia Tiedtke had two. In her first career appearance and start, goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher made four saves, including two back-to-back in the opening minutes of the game.

Northwestern scored the first goal of the game at 15:50 before Dembrowski tied at 18:55. Kueskes gave the Huskies their first lead at 27:57 to go into halftime at 2-1. The Wildcats tied the game again at 41:24, but 10 minutes later, Kueskes notched her second goal. Dembrowski added another at 53:31.

All four of the Huskies' goals began with penalty corner opportunities. UConn finished the game with 13 penalty corners and 19 shots.

UConn had six new starters against the Wildcats compared to last season, including Kueskes and Sprecher.

The Huskies have now won 16 straight season openers.

UConn is back in action Saturday against No. 15 Stanford in Evanston at 2 p.m.
