Khan Fires 8-Under 136 To Lead Huskies
SOUTH KENT, Conn. – UConn senior co-captain Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio), already a two-time champion of the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship, very nearly added a third title to his resume, tying for second place by just one stroke, to lead the UConn golf team to a second-place finish in the rain-shortened Hartford Hawks Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
It was the second straight runner-up finish in two outings this year for the Huskies, who shot an aggregate 17-under 275-284=559. UCF won the 20-team event with a 26-under 274-276=550, as the heavy rain turned the event into a two-round tournament.
Khan, who was tied for the lead after a 6-under par 66 in Round 1, shot an overall 8-under 66-70=136 to tie with Seton Hall's Chris Yeom for second place, just one stroke behind medalist Bobby Bai (66-69=135) of UCF in the huge 112-player field.
It is Khan's lowest total in a two-round tournament and gives him eight career sub-70 rounds and 26 rounds of par or better. It is the sixth Top 10 and seventh Top 20 finish for the senior, whose previous impressive finishes also included a tie for fifth in both the 2016 Gimmler Invitational and the 2017 Loyola Intercollegiate.
Khan had plenty of support from his UConn teammates as senior co-captain Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) also finished in the top five, tying for fifth place with a 5-under 69-70=139, his 15th Top 10 and 21st Top 20 finish. Hervol now has 19 sub-70 rounds and 45 career rounds of par or better.
UConn also had Top 20 finishes by senior Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) and redshirt junior Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.), who were part of a tie for 18th place. Harrington shot a 2-under 72-70=142, for his second Top 20 finish of the season and the seventh of his career and his 22nd round of par or better. Hull fired a 2-under 68-74=142, for his sixth Top 20 finish, his sixth sub-70 round, and his 20th par-or-better round. Sophomore Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) rounded out the UConn team with an 84-80=164 to finish in a tie for 104th place.
Two Huskies played as individuals in the event. Freshman Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.), competing in his first college tournament, shot an even-par 70-74=144, notching his first round of par or better, to finish in a tie for 25th place. Redshirt sophomore Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.), coming back after a year of rehab for an injured shoulder, finished in a tie for 28th place with a 1-over 75-70=145, which included the seventh par-or-better round of his career.
With two Top 3 finishes under their belts, the Huskies continue their season on Oct. 1-2, when they travel to Arkon, Ohio, to compete in the Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.
