No. 2 Huskies Return to Road for Two Games in Virginia

STORRS, Conn. – The No. 2 UConn field hockey team (7-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) hits the road for a pair of games in Virginia this weekend. The Huskies begin the trip at No. 11 Old Dominion (7-0, 1-0) for a conference match on Friday at 5 p.m. before taking on William & Mary (3-3) Sunday at noon.
Last Time Out
The Huskies started BIG EAST Conference play off on a high note, earning an 8-0 win over Quinnipiac last Saturday. Redshirt senior back Cecile Pieper led UConn with six points (2G, 2A) while junior forward Svea Boker added five (2G, 1A). Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher tallied three saves and her fourth shutout of the year.
The Huskies have won 26 straight BIG EAST games, dating back to 2013.
Sprecher, Pieper Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors
Fresh off an 8-0 win over Quinnipiac to open conference play, back Cecile Pieper was tabbed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight time while goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The duo has been crucial to UConn's 7-0 start to the season.
Pieper Makes Immediate Impact for Huskies
Redshirt senior back Cecile Pieper is in Storrs for just one season, but she has been a key player for UConn in each game. The Manneheim, Germany, native leads the Huskies with seven goals and 19 points. She has helped the UConn defense to four shutouts so far this year. Pieper came to Storrs with impressive international experience. A member of the German National Team, she won bronze with Germany at the 2016 Rio Olympics and has played 99 caps for her home country.
Scouting the Monarchs
Old Dominion opened conference play with a 6-1 win over Providence last Friday. This season, Erin Huffman and Rebecca Birch lead the Monarchs with five goals each, while Huffman has the team lead with 12 points. Old Dominion has started three different goalkeepers in cage: Cam MacGillivray (0.44 GAA, .889 save pct.), Lacey Frazier (0.67 GAA, .667 save pct.) and Kealsie Robles (1.43 GAA, .727 save pct.)
Last season, the Huskies defeated the Monarchs in Storrs, 6-0.
Scouting the Tribe
William & Mary fell to Wake Forest, 4-1, on Wednesday. Estelle Hughes has the team lead with six goals and 14 points. Morgan Connor has started all six games in goal and holds a 3.20 goals-against average and a .628 save percentage.
This is the first meetings for the teams since Oct. 8, 2000.
