STORRS, Conn. – The No. 2 UConn field hockey team (9-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) is back at home this weekend for a pair of games, including a BIG EAST contest and a rematch of the 2017 NCAA Championship game. The Huskies take on Temple (2-7, 0-2) Friday at 6 p.m. and No. 3 Maryland (11-0, 3-0 Big Ten) Sunday at noon.
Last Time Out
The Huskies went 2-0 last weekend in a pair of road games. UConn beat then-No. 11 Old Dominion, 4-2, before taking down William & Mary, 6-1.
Against the Monarchs, Amanda Collins, Antonia Tiedtke and Svea Boker each scored while Cecile Pieper had a pair of goals. Against the Tribe, Pieper, Boker, Collins, Amelia Iacobucci, Abby Gooderham, Maddy Wray and Vivienne Tucker scores. Cheyenne Sprecher had a career-high eight saves in goal.
Sprecher, Pieper Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors
For the second straight week, Cheyenne Sprecher and Cecile Pieper earned BIG EAST honors after helping keep UConn undefeated. Sprecher was tabbed Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week after posting 12 saves in two games. Pieper, who has twice been named Defensive Player of the Week, earned Offensive honors after notching three goals and one assist in the two wins.
Pieper Makes Immediate Impact for Huskies
Redshirt senior back Cecile Pieper is in Storrs for just one season, but she has been a key player for UConn in each game. The Manneheim, Germany, native leads the Huskies with 10 goals and 26 points. She has helped the UConn defense to four shutouts so far this year. Pieper came to Storrs with impressive international experience. A member of the German National Team, she won bronze with Germany at the 2016 Rio Olympics and has played 99 caps for her home country.
Scouting the Owls
Temple fell at No. 19 Liberty, 8-2, on Tuesday. Four different Owls have a pair of goals on the year, and Kathyryn Edgar leads the team with seven points. Chloe Johnson has played every game in goal and holds a 4.32 goals-against average and .730 save percentage.
Last season, UConn beat Temple, 4-1.
Scouting the Terrapins
Maryland is coming off a 2-1 win over No. 8 Michigan last weekend. Linnea Gonzales leads the Terps with 10 goals while Madison Maguire has the team lead with nine assists. Sarah Holliday has played every game in goal and holds a 1.60 goals-against average and .700 save percentage.
The Huskies and Terps faced off in the NCAA Championship game in 2017, with UConn taking the 2-1 win for the program's fifth national championship.
