WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshmen Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) and Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) of the UConn women's tennis team were named co-champions of the B Flight at the West Point Invitational.
"This was a very good weekend for our team at the Army Invitational," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "There were 20 competitive DI teams playing, and our overall results show we were one of the top teams in attendance."
Bou and Moreau each won four matches and defeated Syracuse players to be named co-champions.
Bou picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Army's Sasha Inchauste in the quarterfinals before beating Cuse's Libi Mesh, who was seeded second, 1-6, 6-2, 12-10. Moreau defeated Quinnipiac's Kamilla Nella (6-3, 6-1) in the quarterfinals before facing Syracuse's top-seeded Dina Hegab, who she beat in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 10-7.
The freshmen also put up strong showings in doubles play. Bou and senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) won three rounds and advanced to the semifinals of the A Doubles while Moreau and junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) made it to the quarterfinals of the B Doubles draw.
"Our two new freshmen, Bou and Moreau, had breakout performances in singles and doubles," Marshall added. "They both had unbelievable three set wins in the semifinals of the B singles flight, and were crowned co-champions. I was very impressed with their toughness and composure throughout the weekend. Overall the entire team competed at a high level and everyone got some valuable match play experience."
In singles play, Chung advanced to the semifinals of the A Flight consolation bracket. Perrrota made the quarterfinals of the C Flight.
The Huskies will travel to the Viking Invitational at Cleveland State Oct. 5-7.
