ORONO, ME - Behind the strong performance of junior goalie Morgan Fisher, the UConn women's ice hockey team played to a scoreless tie versus Maine on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Fisher made 33 saves for the Huskies (13-12-2, 8-10-2 WHEA) between the pipes, recording her third shutout of the season. Sophomores Natalie Snodgrass and Morgan Wabick led UConn with four shots apiece in the tie with the Black Bears.
Maine goalie Carly Jackson made 21 saves in her shutout of the Huskies, with nine coming in the third period.
First Period
The Husky offense came out aggressive and applied early pressure to Jackson in the first period, peppering the Maine goaltender with six shots but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities in front of the net. The Huskies best scoring opportunity occurred early in the period, but Kayla Mee's attempt hit the pipe. Fisher was equally up to the task, turning away all five shots she saw from the Bulldogs.
Second Period:
UConn continued to attack in the second session as the team fired up six more attempts through the second 20 minutes. The Huskies earned a power play opportunity in the second, but couldn't cash in on the extra man advantage. On the opposite end of the Ice, Fisher continued to deny the Bulldogs as she stuffed 10 shots.
Third Period:
The third period saw Maine outshoot the Huskies 13-9 and the home team had a chance to put one on the board early in the third period, but Fisher stood tall.
Maine got a three-on-one rush opportunity just under four minutes into the period, but Fisher denied the Black Bears at the doorstep as she got her stick on just enough of the puck to impact the shot and cause a misfire.
Each team had a power play opportunity in the third but couldn't capitalize as the special teams dug deep and kept anything from crossing the goal line.
The Huskies had a shot to win it in the final minute, but Briana Colangelo's shot attempt was blocked by the stick of a Maine skater and time expired before UConn could launch another attack.
Overtime:
The home team controlled the majority of overtime as they put up five shots on goal while holding UConn without an attempt. Despite the disadvantage, the Huskies forced a penalty kill and Morgan Fisher collected five saves to preserve the shutout and earn a conference point.
