UConn Alums to Compete in Olympic Qualifiers

STORRS, Conn. – Three former UConn field hockey players will compete for their home countries in FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers.
Casey Umstead will compete for the U.S. National Team against India in a pair of games on Nov. 1 and 2. Umstead is a 2018 alumna of UConn. She was an NFHCA First Team All-American in 2017 and helped UConn to the 2014 and 2017 NCAA Championships.
Cecile Pieper will represent Germany against Italy on Nov. 2 and 3. Pieper played the 2018 season at UConn and was an NFHCA First Team All-American while leading the Huskies to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Roisin Upton will compete for Ireland against Canada on Nov. 2 and 3. Upton is a 2016 alumna of UConn and helped the Huskies to the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Championships while being named an NFHCA First Team All-American twice.
The FIH Olympic Qualifiers are the final state of the qualification to the 2020 Summer Olympics. Fourteen teams will compete for seven qualifying spots. The teams will play two back-to-back matches with aggregate scores.
Germany is currently ranked No. 4 in the world while Ireland is No. 8 and the U.S. is No. 13.
