HARTFORD, Conn. – UConn women's rowing competed at the 21^st annual Head of the Riverfront this past Sunday, with the Open 8+ finishing at 16:20.14 to claim third place – UConn's best placement of the day.

Marking the first regatta of the fall rowing season, the Huskies finished the day with three top-10 finishes out of the seven boats that competed. In addition to the Open 8+, UConn's highest placements of the afternoon were the Women's Open 4+ 'C' boat (4^th) and the Women's Open 4+ 'A' (6^th).

"All four of our eights felt they had solid rows this morning," said 23^rd-year head coach Jennifer Sanford. "With so few opportunities to race it's always good to finish feeling satisfied with the effort."

UConn 'B' finished 13^th in the Open 8+, with UConn 'C' earning 14^th place and UConn 'D' rounding out the trio with a 15^th place finish.

Sanford added, "It was unfortunate in the afternoon that two of out of our three fours got caught up in sea grass which completely limited their ability to get down the course competitively. That being said, sometimes there are things we just can't control."

In the Open 4+, UConn 'B' collected a 12^th place finish after crossing the finish line with a time of 20:56.91.

During the duration of race day, UConn's rowing team wore pink to support breast cancer and green headbands in honor of mental health awareness week.

"The message here is to move forward from it and work hard in practice in the upcoming weeks to prepare for the Head of Charles."

UConn women's rowing will head to Boston on Oct. 19 to compete in the Head of the Charles.
