Third Varsity 8 Captures First Place at 1969 Cup

PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J. – The UConn women's rowing team put on an impressive performance Saturday afternoon on Mercer Lake at the first ever 1969 Cup. The Huskies captured five top-five finishes on the day, highlighted by a first-place finish by the Third Varsity 8.
"This was a great day of racing for our team today," said 23rd-year head coach Jennifer Sanford. "Having back to back 2k's gave us an opportunity to shift gears and get a taste of what is to come this spring."
The Third Varsity 8 garnered the Huskies' best placement of the afternoon, crossing the finish line at 7:19.39 - 12 seconds ahead of Villanova, to grab first place in the Grand Final. The First Varsity 8 (7:15.57) and Second Varsity 8 (7:15.95) also earned top placements, as their finishing times earned them third and second place finishes in their respective Grand Finals.
Sanford added, "There was nothing to lose, and I think it was a learning opportunity for each of our boats."
UConn rounded out the day with two boats competing in the Women's Freshman Eight finals. UConn 'B' earned a third-place finish in the Petite Final with a time of 9:01.40, while UConn 'A's time of 8:26.82 garnered them fifth place.
"The competitive racing with schools we will see many times this spring will hopefully bring us into the next segment of our training hungry to continue to build momentum and put ourselves in a position to win races this spring."
