TERRE HAUTE, IN. – Junior Mia Nahom competed in the NCAA National Championship Race on Saturday morning. The race was held at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country course in Indiana.
Nahom finished the women's 6k race coming in 161st overall out of a field of 252 runners, with a time of 21:43.1. She is the first women's cross country runner to compete in the national championship race since Lauren Sara in 2014.
"Mia's season exemplifies hard work, consistency, and trust," said head coach Lindsay Crevoiserat. "She came in the fall with no base behind her. She had some struggles in the first month of runs. I knew she had talent, but I had no idea how quickly she would come around."
With the help of Crevoiserat, a former national championship runner at UConn as well, Nahom grew more and more confident in her ability. After a top-five finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional race, Nahom earned a spot in the national championship.
"It's been a joy to watch her get more confident each race and each week. After getting to know Mia, I'm really excited to see where she can take her running talent."
The cross country season ends after Saturday's race, and there is a high expectation and excitement level for the next season, with Nahom leading the charge.
