STORRS, Conn. – Former UConn field hockey standouts Roisin Upton and Cecile Pieper helped their home nations qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo through the 2019 FIH Olympic Qualifiers.
Fourteen nations competed in two back-to-back games with aggregate scoring for seven spots.
Upton helped the Irish National Team qualify for the Olympics for the first time ever. After being tied 0-0 through regulation in the two games, Ireland and Canada went to penalty strokes, which the Irish won 4-3.
Pieper, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, scored twice in Germany's second qualifier. The Germans outscored Italy 9-0 over the two games.
Upton is a 2016 alumna of UConn and helped the Huskies to the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Championships while being named an NFHCA First Team All-American twice. Pieper played the 2018 season at UConn and was an NFHCA First Team All-American while leading the Huskies to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
