Huskies Blow Past NJIT, 69-47

HARTFORD, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team capped the 2019 portion of its schedule in strong fashion, blowing past the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders, 69-47, Sunday afternoon at the XL Center.
Christian Vital led UConn (9-3) with 23 points, five rebounds and four steals while sophomore Brendan Adams was the second Husky to finish in double figures with 10. Additionally, freshman Jalen Gaffney dished out a career and team-high seven assists, and Akok Akok pulled down 10 rebounds while also adding five more blocks to his season total.
UConn started off strong and jumped out to an early 14-8 at the second media timeout. The Huskies continued to build their lead as the half wore on – A pair of free throws from Vital were followed up by three consecutive triples – two from Vital, one from Tyler Polley – to push the UConn advantage to 25-10. UConn would retain the 15-point advantage and take a 35-20 lead into the break.
The scoring would continue into the second half, as UConn used a 21-10 run to open up a 56-30 lead with 10:13 to play in the half. Adams had three buckets during the spurt, Vital and Josh Carlton each contributed two, while Alterique Gilbert added one of his own. The Huskies would coast to the finish line, closing out 2019 with a 22-point victory.
