STORRS, Conn. – UConn golf coach Dave Pezzino has announced the addition of Max Major to his staff as an assistant coach.
Major, a 2018 graduate of Johnson & Wales University (Miami, Fla.) with a degree in Sports Management, will help Pezzino with all aspects of the men's golf program at UConn, including recruiting.
"I am very excited to add a young man with Max's background in golf to our staff," Pezzino said. "He will be a jack of all trades for us. He will be handling recruiting, practice operations, advance work on tournament courses we play and much more. His first official day can't get here soon enough."
Major is a native of Rutland, Vt., and a product of Rutland High School, the same school that produced current UConn redshirt junior Drake Hull. Major attended the University of Hartford for one year, where he played Division I varsity golf, before transferring to Johnson and Wales. At Johnson & Wales, Major played three years of NAIA golf, helping the team to a national No. 1 ranking in 2016.
Previous to his college career, Major played four years of varsity golf at Rutland High School, serving as team captain as a sophomore, junior, and senior. He also was a four-year varsity hockey player, serving as captain as a junior and a senior.
Major has a wealth of golf experience, working at major resorts in the Florida area, including Trump National in Jupiter, the Rick Smith Golf Academy in Doral and the Turnberry Isle Resort in Aventura. He also spent time working at Wentworth by the Sea Country Club in Rye, N.H., and at his home course at Rutland Country Club.
"Max has a wonderful understanding of collegiate golf and his golf acumen is extremely high," Pezzino said. "He is an elite player in his own right and I know that will be a big asset to our student-athletes. His desire to be a college coach and chase championships makes me excited to have him join our program."
The Huskies will begin the spring portion of their 2018-19 season on Feb. 23-25, when they participate in the Loyola Intercollegiate at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. That is the first of five events for the Huskies, leading up to the American Athletic Conference Championship, set for April 21-23 at the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Fla.
