UConn Suffers 18-9 Setback To No. 4 James Madison

SPARKS GLENCOE, Md. – Playing the defending national champions in an early season neutral site contest, the UConn women's lacrosse team played with great fight but ultimately fell to No. 4 James Madison, 18-9, Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Lacrosse Facility. UConn drops to 0-3, while James Madison improves to 2-1.
Sydney Watson paced the Huskies with four goals and an assist for five points while Lexi Kenneally contributed three points on two goals and an assist. Olivia Miles, Casey O'Grady and Abby Vetsch also found the back of the net for UConn, tallying one goal apiece.
The Huskies took the fight to James Madison in the first half. After the Dukes took an early 2-0 lead, Watson responded with scores of her own to tie the game at two. UConn and JMU swapped the few goals before the Huskies tallied three straight – from Watson, Vetsch and O'Grady – to take a 6-4 lead with 16:15 to go in the half. Three consecutive tallies from James Madison allowed them to regain the lead, but Olivia Miles put one in the back of the net with 29 seconds remaining to tie the game 7-7 heading into halftime.
James Madison distanced themselves in the second half, as the defending national champions opened up the second half on a 10-0 scoring run to take a commanding 17 -7 lead. Watson and Kenneally each scored a goal late in the half to cut into the deficit a bit, but the Dukes sealed the win with a final score with 90 seconds remaining in regulation.

UConn is idle for a week before hosting the New Hampshire Wildcats in its 2019 home opener on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Sherman Family Complex. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
