After a winter break that lasted more than 3½ months, the UConn men's golf team gets back into action this weekend as the Huskies kick off the spring portion of their 2018-19 schedule at the Loyola Intercollegiate, playing Saturday through Monday at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Loyola is the first of five intercollegiate events for the Huskies this spring, leading up to the American Athletic Conference Championships in Florida on April 21-23.
"For our team, it is once again a demanding national schedule that takes us from Arizona to Florida," UConn coach Dave Pezzino said. "It gives our guys a great opportunity to see how we stand nationally, because we will compete against teams from all over the country."
After the Loyola Intercollegiate, the Huskies will head for Florida and the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate on March 4-5 at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. On March 29-31, UConn journeys back to the Sunshine State to compete in the FAU Spring Championship at the Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton.
UConn begins April competition on April 5-7 in the prestigious Clemson Invitational at the Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Sunset, S.C., and follows that by playing in the Rutherford Intercollegiate on April 13-14 at the Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Penn.
The AAC Championship, at the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course at Palm Harbor, Fla., starts postseason golf for UConn, with an eye toward NCAA Regional and Championship play.
"The goal is to get our players peaking for postseason golf," Pezzino said. "I look forward to challenging our players this spring as I know how hard they worked during the winter break. Many of them went south to practice and a few of them got to compete at some nationally-respected amateur events. And the addition of (new assistant coach) Max Major will be a major asset for our guys."
The Loyola Intercollegiate is a three-day event which will feature a 17-team field. It will be played on the 7,015-yard, Par 72 Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear.
