CHESNUT HILL, Mass. – In Game 2 of the Hockey East quarterfinals, the UConn women's ice hockey team took the fight to the sixth-ranked Boston College Eagles. The Huskies battled valiantly and left everything they had out on the ice, but their efforts weren't enough, as they fell, 5-4, in an overtime thriller. UConn closes the door on the 2018-19 season, finishing 14-18-4.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind a goal from Lindsay Agnew. UConn answered the bell with less than three minutes remaining in the opening period after Natalie Snodgrass' wrister tied the game at one.
The Huskies opened up a 3-1 advantage after back-to-back strikes from senior Kayla Mee and freshman Danika Pasqua and seemed to possess all the momentum, but an unlucky bounce allowed BC to score and close the gap to one with less than a second remaining in the period.
The home team evened the score at three less than four minutes into the third stanza on a goal from Erin Connolly, then took a 4-3 lead following Makenna Newkirk's tally at 7:55. UConn didn't panick, and after swapping out netminder Morgan Fisher for an extra attacker, the Huskies found the equalizer they needed as Snodgrass got her second goal of the afternoon to tie the game 4-4.
In the extra session, the home team was able to tap in a rebound to give them a 5-4 victory.
1st Period
Boston College was the first team to break through, tallying a goal at 3:04. Lindsay Agnew sliced through the defense and used a stick deke to gain a slight advantage on goalie Morgan Fisher, nestling it in the bottom right corner.
The Huskies got one back at the 17:26 mark to even the game at 1-1 after classmates Morgan Wabick and Natalie Snodgrass teamed up for a 2-on-1 break. Wabick raced down the left side of the ice, dumped the puck back to Snodgrass, and the sophomore fired a wrist shot past the glove of Maddy McArthur and into the back of the net.
2nd Period
UConn put two more on the board in the second period. The Huskies worked the puck around their offensive zone until Kayla Mee, positioned at the top, fired a straight-line shot from just inside the point that rocketed into the cage at 6:48. Danika Pasqua dumped the biscuit in the basket to push the Husky lead to 3-1 at 9:28 after she received the puck from Savannah Bouzide and Viki Harkness.
Boston College got one back, tapping in a goal at 19:59 to cut the UConn lead in half.
3rd Period
The home team tied the game up at 3-3 after Erin Connolly scored at 3:52, and then took a one-goal lead after Makenna Newkirk's tally with 7:55 elapsed in the period.
Eagerly searching for an equalizer, UConn called a late timeout and elected to swap out Fisher for an extra attacker. The gamble payed dividends, as Briana Colangelo dug the puck out of traffic and dished it off to Snodgrass, who lit the lamp for the second time to tie the game 4-4 at 18:13.
Overtime
The home team scored the golden goal in OT, as Ryan Little tapped in a rebound to give BC the 5-4 win and a series sweep.
