Third Varsity 4+ Captures First Place Finish at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – Opening its 2019 Spring Season in sunny Orlando, Fla., the UConn women's rowing team held its own on Lake Pickett, capping off the morning with a first-place finish in the Third Varsity 4+.
The Huskies opened its spring slate against Jacksonville, UCO and UCF on Friday morning, and finished the day with one first-place, one second-place and four third-place finishes.
"We had a great week of training in Miami with much needed time on the water," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "Finishing the week at UCF is a nice way for us to start our racing season as we can see where we stack up against some very fast crews."
UConn narrowly missed another first-place finish in one of its races, crossing the finish line just a second behind UCF in the Second Varsity 4+ (7:52.64). In the Varsity 8+, the Huskies (6:49.9) were 10 seconds behind the Knights.
Sanford would go on to express her thoughts on the day, saying "Overall I was happy with the results from the day. It was unfortunate that the 2nd varsity 8 caught a crab as they had a great piece outside of that. Our goal was to have each boat race the best piece possible. Some did that today while others found multiple things to work on going into our next race."
The Third Varsity 4+ beat the UCF and Jacksonville boats en route to a first-place finish, completing the course in a time of 8:12.5. The group of Janet Wang, Isabella Huban, Kervelle Baird, Megan Stevens and Dolores Kane earned UConn the strong finish.
"Our team was very proud of the win from the 3rd varsity four," exclaimed Sanford. We are looking forward to getting home and getting on the water so that we can continue to work on gaining speed."
