CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The UConn rowing team competed in the Knecht Cup this past weekend on the Cooper River, with two boats earning top-five finishes in the field of elite rowing programs from throughout the country.
Five of the six UConn crews secured their spots in Sunday's grand finals after placing top-4 in their Saturday qualifiers. The Second Varsity 4+ earned the Huskies' best placing on day one with a winning time of 8:08.52. The Novice 4+ earned a second-place finish in its heat, while the Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+ each earned third-place finishes to move on to the grand finals. The Varsity 8+ advanced to the petite final after posting a fifth-place result in its semifinal.
"I'm very pleased with the results from this weekend," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "Having five boats make the grand final was a great accomplishment. Although the Varsity 8+ didn't make the grand final, they had three very solid races and showed that we are right in the mix with some very fast teams."
UConn recorded two top-five finishes in Sunday's grand finals from the Novice 4+ (8:16.62) and the Second Varsity 4+ (8:07.50). The Second Varsity 8+ recorded a fifth-place finish while the Varsity 4+ and the Third Varsity 8+ each placed sixth.
"Across the board, this was a momentum-building weekend for us. We are excited to gain more speed this week in practice in preparation for some very competitive teams at the Cherry Hill Invitational on Saturday," said Sanford. Results for UConn's Sunday finals are available below.
