CHERRY HILL, N.J. – UConn rowing enjoyed an exciting day of competition at the Cherry Hill Invitational on Saturday where the Huskies earned one first-place, two second-place and one third-place finish in the grand finals. UConn capitalized on their training and turned in one of its most impressive performances of the spring slate.
"We had a great showing at the Cherry Hill Invitational today," said 22-year head coach Jennifer Sanford. "Each boat took what we worked on in practice and executed it today so that we are faster than last week, which is what the process is all about."
The Third Varsity 8+ earned UConn's best placement of the afternoon, recording a first-place finish in its grand final rematch. The Huskies finished in a time of 7:29.32, three seconds ahead of second-place George Washington. The Colonials and Huskies had finished first and second place, respectively, earlier in the morning going into the final.
UConn had two entries in the Second Varsity 4+ and earned a top-four finish. The Second Varsity 4+ grabbed second-place in a time of 8:23.55. The 'B' boat took fifth and finished seven seconds behind Jacksonville's crew.
"We have gained confidence with each race, and now without having a race to prepare for next weekend we will take a look at some potential line-up changes across the board," added Sanford. "Our boats rowed well in the challenging winds. I am proud of the approach that was taken today by everybody."
The Huskies continue to build up momentum as the team heads into its final race before the AAC Championship, preparing for the Women's Eastern Sprints which take place on Sunday, May 5 in Worcester, Mass.
