INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – UConn senior golfer Jimmy Hervol has been rewarded for his outstanding 2018-19 season with a berth in the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.
Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) was one of just 45 individual golfers selected from across the country, along with 81 college teams, which will make up the field to compete in the national tournament, announced Wednesday night by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee. Hervol is the first UConn individual player to earn a spot in the NCAAs since Rich Pepin in 1992.
Hervol, a two-time UConn co-captain, will head for the University of Louisville Golf Club (Simpsonville, Ky.) on May 13-15, one of six regional tournament sites. Thirteen teams and 10 individual players will compete at the Louisville site. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals, set for May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Hervol, who was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Conference Team for the third consecutive season on Wednesday, was one of only four individual players from the conference to earn an NCAA berth, joining Bobby Bai and Kyler Tate from UCF and Austin Squires from Cincinnati. AAC teams which will compete in the NCAAs include SMU, Memphis, and USF.
Hervol set a UConn record in 2018-19 with a 71.06 per round average for 32 rounds, earning eight Top 10 and nine Top 20 Finishes in the Huskies' 11 events. He had 20 rounds of par-or-better and nine sub-70 rounds. He was named the AAC Men's Golfer of the Week on April 10.
Hervol also owns the UConn record for the lowest four-year per-round average at 72.51 for 130 rounds. He has the Huskies' career records for sub-70 rounds with 26 and rounds of par-or-better with 61. In 45 events in his college career, Hervol notched 21 Top 10 and 28 Top 20 Finishes.
