NCAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP LOUISVILLE REGIONAL RESULTS
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – UConn senior golfer Jimmy Hervol fired his third consecutive sub-par round on the final day of the NCAA Golf Championship Louisville Regional on Wednesday, but fell just one stroke shy of forcing a playoff for medalist honors and the chance to advance to next week's NCAA Golf Championship Finals.
Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) shot a 1-under 70 on Wednesday at the University of Louisville Golf Club to give him an aggregate 6-under 67-70-70=207, leaving him in a four-way tie for second place, one stroke behind Tripp Kinney of Iowa State (69-65-72=206).
Hervol, part of the final threesome on the course, was at 5-under through the 15th hole on Wednesday, but then mounted a thrilling charge – sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on the Par 3 16th and rolling in a 70-foot birdie putt on the Par 5 17th to reach 7-under and tie Kinney for the lead. But he missed the green on 18 and his chip attempt at par nearly holed out, but he had to settle for a bogey and second place.
Of the 13 teams and 10 golfers playing as individuals (75 total players), the low five teams and the low player not on those five teams advance to the NCAA Championship Finals next week in Fayetteville, Ark. The low five teams at the Louisville Regional were Oklahoma State, Auburn, Baylor, Louisville and North Florida. Kinney's Iowa State team finished in eighth place, allowing him to advance as an individual.
Hervol, who finished with the lowest score of any of the 10 players playing as an individual, ended in a tie with Louisville's Matthias Schmid, Arizona's Trevor Werbylo, and Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland, who was the low amateur at The Masters last month. Hervol tied for second in Par 3 scoring and tied for fourth in Par 4 scoring among the 75-player field. He had 11 birdies and 36 pars during the 54-hole event.
Hervol, the first individual UConn golfer in 27 years to reach the NCAA Championship, finishes his college career as the all-time career scoring leader at UConn with a 72.44 per round average, and he holds the single-season scoring record at 70.89 per round, set this past season. The three-time All-Conference selection also owns the UConn records for sub-70 rounds with 27 and rounds of par-or-better with 64. The Louisville Regional marked the 22nd Top 10 Finish of his career.
