NORMAN, Okla. – For the second straight year, UConn golf team members Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) have been honored as Division I Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Hervol and Harrington, both of whom graduated in May, 2019, are two of 279 Division I student-athletes who earned All-America Scholar status, out of a record 555 athletes who were honored across Division I, II,III, NAIA, and NJCAA schools.
To be eligible for All-America Scholar status, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, participate in at least 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 per round, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
"I couldn't be more proud of Jimmy and Nick as they again receive this double honor for achievements on the golf course and in the classroom," said UConn golf coach Dave Pezzino. "These two young men have set the bar pretty high in both areas."
Hervol, named the 2018-19 New England Division I Player of the Year, leaves UConn with the school records for the best per-round scoring average for a single-season (70.89) and for a four-year career (72.44). The two-time UConn captain was UConn's low scorer in six events this past season, including a first-place tie in the UConn Collegiate Invitational. He had eight Top 10 and nine Top 20 finishes and 22 rounds of par-or-better, including 10 sub-70 rounds.
Hervol was a three-time All-American Athletic Conference selection, a three-time PING Division I All-Northeast Region pick, and a four-time AAC All-Academic Team pick. He tied for second, just one stroke back, in the NCAA Division I Championship Louisville Regional and reached the Purchase, N.Y., Sectional in U.S. Open qualifying.
Harrington was also an All-New England Division I pick, a PING Division I All-Northeast Regional selection and an AAC All-Academic Team pick. He finished third on the Huskies in scoring this season (72.1), leading UConn in scoring in three consecutive events. He posted three Top 10 and six Top 20 finishes, with 15 rounds of par-or-better and five sub-70 rounds.
"Jimmy and Nick are two great examples of how special we think the academic and athletic experience can be in our program," Pezzino said. "They walk out of Storrs as two of our best."
