STORRS, Conn. --- Five new events, including a spring semester home tournament, and a third consecutive trip to Hawaii highlight the 11-event, 2019-20 regular-season schedule for the UConn golf team, announced Thursday by head coach Dave Pezzino.
The Huskies, coming off an outstanding season that included a tournament championship, six Top Five finishes, and captain Jimmy Hervol advancing to the NCAA Regionals, will again compete in five events in the fall part of their schedule and six events in the spring portion, before postseason play in the American Athletic Conference Championship and the NCAAs.
"We are looking forward to this challenging schedule, which will take our team to some different and demanding courses throughout the country, competing against some outstanding college teams," said Pezzino, starting his 13th season as head coach. "We strive to do that every season, to help our team prepare for May (postseason) golf."
The Huskies will also be returning to Ellington Ridge Country Club to host a spring tournament, the UConn Intercollegiate, in addition to hosting the second UConn Collegiate Invitational at GreatHorse in the fall.
"We are excited to be back at Ellington Ridge, our partner in hosting the Connecticut Cup for so many years," Pezzino said. "(Director of Golf Operations) Chris Bland and his staff have been wonderful to work with.
"And after the tremendous experience we had with our event last year at GreatHorse, we couldn't be more pleased to return there this fall. The Antonacci family, Bryan Smithwick and his staff and professional Billy Downes couldn't have been more helpful to us and the beautiful venue speaks for itself."
Led by seniors Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) and Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.), UConn will open the 2019-20 season with its first-ever trip to the Seven Oaks Golf Course (Hamilton, N.Y.) to compete in the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational, hosted by Colgate University, on Sept. 7-8.
On Sept. 16-17, the Huskies move on to the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bull's Bridge Golf Club (South Kent, Conn.), a perennial stop on the UConn schedule.
The UConn Collegiate Invitational at GreatHorse (Hampden, Mass.) follows, a three-day event on Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
After a four-year absence, the Huskies will return to the Pete Dye Golf Club (Bridgeport, WVa.) on Oct. 7-8 to compete in The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by West Virginia University.
UConn will close out the fall portion of its schedule on Nov. 1-3 with a trip to Hawaii for the third consecutive season, again competing in the University of Hawaii's Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course (Lahaina, Hawaii).
The spring portion of the schedule begins with a unique event, a one-day, head-to-head match against West Virginia University on Feb. 2 at Reunion Resort (Kissimmee, Fla.).
Then UConn returns to tournament play on Feb. 22-24, at the Loyola Intercollegiate, hosted by Loyola of Maryland at Palm Valley Golf Club (Goodyear, Ariz.). Loyola also hosts UConn's next competition, on March 2-3, the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate at Fort Lauderdale Country Club (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
Another first-time tournament for UConn, the Furman Intercollegiate, takes place on March 27-29 at the Furman University Golf Club (Greenville, S.C.).
The Huskies then come home for their own UConn Intercollegiate on April 9-11 at Ellington Ridge Country Club (Ellington, Conn.) and they finish their regular season on April 18-19 at the Penn State Blue Course (State College, Pa.) in the Rutherford Intercollegiate, a tournament where UConn senior Hull is the defending individual champion.
Postseason play begins at the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 26-28 at the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course (Palm Harbor, Fla.), UConn's last AAC appearance before moving to the Big East Conference in 2020-21.
The NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 18-20 at various sites throughout the country, while the NCAA National Championship takes place on May 29-June 3 at Greyhawk Golf Club (Scottsdale, Ariz).
