AMHERST, Mass. – The UConn women's cross country team made their 2019 debut on Saturday, competing for the first time under new head coach Lindsay Crevoiserat and finishing second overall at the Minuteman Invitational at UMass.
The Huskies had seven-runner finish in the top-20 on the way to a 54-point showing in the five-team field of runners. The Boston College Eagles were the top-team on the day with 15 point and all-seven of their top runners finishing in the top-10 overall. The Huskies were followed by host UMass (77 pts), Sacred Heart (108 pts) and WPI (153 pts).
"BC is ranked third in the region for a reason but for us, we had a solid day all around; a really good check point," stated Crevoiserat. "We have a very strong four up front who can be solid and keep progressing. I think for us, that fifth spot will take some time to figure out. It's going to be competitive to see who grabs it."
The Huskies were led by their top-finisher in junior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) who earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 17:49. On her heels was grad student Ericka Randazzo (Norwalk, Conn.) in eighth place with a time of 17:52.
Sophomore Kate Daley (Clinton, Conn.) was just outside the top-10 in 11th place, posting a time of 18:18 and classmate Randi Burr (Mankato, Minn.) rounded out UConn's solid top-four with a time of 18:23 to take 14th.
A UConn three-pack of runners capped the Huskies' top-seven runners, all in the top-20 of 72 runners. Sophomore Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) led the small pack taking 18th in 18:46. Right behind her was freshmen Alyssa Kraus (Norton, Ohio) who finished 19th running in 18:46 as well and Caroline Webb (Greenwich, Conn.) in 20th at 18:47 in their first collegiate races.
"Again, this was a good check point to see where everyone is at to this point," said Crevoiserat. "Today was a good way for me to get a look at everyone, a great learning opportunity. We have so much potential on this team."
The Huskies will get back to training as they have a four-week stretch before they run again at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Saturday, October 5th.
