STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's track and field team is set to compete in its first competition of the 2020 season, as the Huskies travel to Cambridge for the Beantown Challenge hosted by Harvard University. The Beantown Challenge will be broadcast on ESPN+.
This year's event will get underway at 11:30 am on Saturday with the Huskies competing against the host Crimson, UMass, Northeastern, Boston College, UMass Lowell, Stonehill, Holy Cross and Brown.
The Huskies will have two entries in the pentathlon on Friday. Sophomore Sophia Podeszwa and junior Kelly Ward will represent UConn in the opening event of the weekend competition. This is the first indoor pentathlon for both Podeszwa and Ward this season.
"First scoring meet of the year," commented director. "We won it last year, on the men's side, after being on our backs and we really had to battle back. We will not have a true championship line-up yet, but we are still heading up there with the mindset that we need to come home with a 'W'. We are anxious to see the freshmen, anxious to see everybody in a 'we have to do our job' situation. And that is what it's all about; doing your job"
The Huskies got a chance to compete before the holiday break, getting a strong performance at the BU Season Opener. Coach Roy looks at that BU meet as the final exam for the fall track season and the Huskies are now ready to start the New Year and semester laying the building blocks for tests to come down the road.
"BU was our final exam for the fall and this is the first class of our second semester with a mid-term at the AAC Indoor and the final at the AAC Outdoor," commented Roy. "This is day one, the first day of classes so to speak."
"This will be the coaching staff's first chance to see everyone in a competitive situation where everyone needs to set up," stated Roy. "The women have been great and you can see the shift in their approach and how we go about things. We have expectations for our track & field program that are the same across the board and that starts for us this weekend."
