PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn men's hockey team lost a hard-fought battle with No. 12 Providence Saturday night, falling 2-1 in a Hockey East match-up from Schneider Arena. UConn got a power play goal from sophomore Ruslan Iskhakov (Moscow, Russia) in the loss.
UConn drops their fourth-straight and falls to 7-10-4 overall and 4-7-2 in Hockey East and also drops the season series with Providence (0-2-1). The Friars move to 13-5-5 overall and 7-4-2 in the league.
Providence got a first period power play goal from freshman Patrick Moynihan to take a 1-0 lead but the Huskies answered with a power play score of their own from Iskhakov. The two teams battled at 1-1 to the third period and just 48 seconds in, freshman Max Crozier scored on a rebound to provide the game-winner for the Friars.
UConn had back-to-back power play chances late in the third period but couldn't find the tying goal. Sophomore Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) made 24 saves in the loss. The Huskies were 1-for-4 on the power play and Providence was 1-for-3.
PC sophomore Tyce Thompson dished out two assists while goaltender Michael Lackey stopped 27 shots to earn the win.
1st Period:
The Huskies and Friars traded power play goals in the first period. Providence struck first, getting on the board at 5:37 on their first power play chance of the night. Moynihan found his way to the front of the net and then got a redirect on a Tyce Thompson feed into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies got the chance to answer on their first chance with the extra skater and Iskhakov delivered at 7:50 with his sixth goal on the season. Senior Benjamin Freeman (Falmouth, Maine) sent the puck out of the left corner to freshman Jake Flynn (Bridgewater, Mass.) at the point who fed Iskhakov for a one-timer in the right circle, and he buried it to knot it at 1-1.
2nd Period:
Neither team found the back of the net in the second while both had power play opportunities. Providence was 0-for-2 in the period while the Huskies came up empty on just one chance.
3rd Period:
The Friars took the lead just 48 seconds into the final stanza. Thompson was stopped by Vomacka but the rebound was left out front where an oncoming Crozier was able to bat it in at the right post for his third of the season and a 2-1 lead.
UConn got back-to-back power plays at 11:44, on a Jack Dugan slashing call, and at 13:41, on a Spencer Young interference call. The Friar penalty kill went to work and held the Huskies to just one shot on goal over the four-minute stretch to keep the game at 2-1.
