The UConn Huskies will head down to the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Wednesday night to play host to the Maine Black Bears in a Hockey East match-up live on NESNplus and TSN throughout Canada.
The Huskies and Black Bears have not met on the ice since back in October of last season at the XL Center. Since joining Hockey East, the Huskies are 5-2-3 against the Black Bears and 2-0-2 in the state of Connecticut. UConn and Maine have faced-off once before at the Webster Bank Arena, a 6-3 win for the Huskies on January 12, 2017.
UConn is winless in their last five and is looking to snap a four-game losing streak after falling at No. 12 nationally ranked Providence, 2-1, on Saturday night.Â
The Huskies will head to this week's No. 12 ranked team Northeastern on Saturday afternoon before taking part in the inaugural Connecticut Ice tournament next week at Webster Bank Arena.Â
UConn and Maine enter Wednesday night's match-up tied with New Hampshire for seventh place in the Hockey East standings, all with 10 points on the year.
Sophomore Ruslan Iskhakov scored the Huskies' lone goal in Saturday night's loss at Providence. It was Iskhakov's sixth goal on the year and his second on the power play. He is now tied with classmates Jachym Kondelik and Carter Turnbull and freshman Vladislav Firstov for the team lead in goals scored this season.
Senior Benjamin Freeman picked-up an assist on the Iskhakov goal and now leads the team in points (14) and assists (11). He is also ranked fourth in Hockey East in face-off percentage, winning .597 percent (200-135) of his face-offs on the year.
Senior defenseman Wyatt Newpower had two assists in the loss to Merrimack last week, his third multi-point game this season. Newpower leads all UConn defensemen with 10 points (2g/8a) on the year and leads the team with a +6 rating. He is currently eighth in Hockey East in blocked shots, averaging 1.29 pg.
Junior defenseman Adam Karashik is third in Hockey East in blocked shots. Karashik has 34 blocks, an average 1.70 per game.
Last Season vs. Maine
October 26, 2018 - W, 5-2 - XL Center
UConn senior Karl El-Mir scored a pair of goals, one shorthanded, as the Huskies picked-up a 5-2 Hockey East win over the Maine Black Bears in their home opener last season. Junior Alexander Payusov scored for the third-straight game while freshman Jachym Kondelik had a pair of assists . Junior Wyatt Newpower had a career-high three assists. Maine's only lead of the night came on Tim Doherty's goal just 1:18 into the first period. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead into the first break on goals by El-Mir and Payusov and after a scoreless second, put three on the board in the third from El-Mir, freshman Carter Turnbull and junior Benjamin Freeman. The Huskies outshot the Black Bears 33-26, with junior goaltender Adam Huska making 24 saves to secure the win. Maine's Jeremy Swayman turned in 28 saves in the loss.
October 27, 2018 - T, 2-2 - XL Center
The UConn men's hockey team got a pair of power play goals from junior Alexander Payusov but two third period Maine scores produced a 2-2 tie at the XL Center in the series finale last season. After a scoreless first period, Payusov ran his goal-scoring streak to four-straight games with a pair of second period tallies, both coming on the power play. Maine's Chase Pearson scored at the 13:00 minute mark of the third period on the power play to pull his team to within 2-1. The Black Bears pulled goaltender Jeremy Swayman with 1:55 left and found the equalizer just 33 seconds later as Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup buried a rebound to force overtime. The Black Bears got 26 saves from Swayman in salvaging a point on the weekend and outshot the Huskies, 33-28. UConn goaltender Adam Huska stopped 31 shots.
