Huskies Knock Off No. 2 Boston College, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Huskies used a three-goal second period to fuel a 3-1 upset win over the No. 2 nationally ranked Boston College Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
The Huskies snap a six-game slide in the all-time series with BC and beat their highest ranked opponent for the second time in program history (W, 4-2 vs. No. 2 UMass/Mar. 8, 2019). With the win, UConn took four of a possible six points on the weekend in the Hockey East standings, improving to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, the Huskies scored three goals in a span of 4:14 in the second period to seize control of the game. Juniors Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) and Marc Gatcomb (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Nick Capone (East Haven, Conn.) provided all the UConn scoring during the spurt.
Evans finished the night with a goal and an assist while Gatcomb came up with his second goal on the weekend. Capone scored his first collegiate goal while classmate Artem Shlaine (Moscow, Russia) notched his first career point with an assist. Sophomore Roman Kinal (Waterford, Mich.) had a pair of assists, his first points on the season.
Junior Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) stopped 27 shots to earn the win.
Boston College, who suffered their first loss ont eh season and fall to 5-1-1 and 1-1-0 in Hockey East, got on the board in the third period with a power play goal from Trevor Kuntar. Freshman goaltender Henry Wilder made 39 saves in the loss.
1st Period:
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, each getting eight shots on net. UConn killed off a pair of BC power plays in the first.
2nd Period:
The Huskies found their offense in the second and put three in the back of the net in a span of 4:14. Evans got the Huskies on the board at 4:15, scoring on a pretty feed from Shlaine on a rush into the zone. Shlaine sent a pass to the far-right post on Evans stick who buried it for his first goal of the season.

Gatcomb made it 2-0 UConn at the 7:42 mark as he was able to find a loose puck out of a scrum in front of Wilder and buried the rebound off a Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) shot. It was Gatcomb's second goal on the weekend and the season.

Capone made it 3-0 just 52 seconds later with his first collegiate goal. Kinal fired on Wilder who made the save but the puck bounced in the air near the left post where Capone batted it out of the air and just over the goaltender's shoulder for a three-goal edge.

3rd Period:
BC pulled within 3-1 at the 12:57 mark of the third as Kuntar scored his fourth of the season, coming on the power play. Mike Hardman fired on net from out wide on the right wing and Kuntar was able to get a stick on it and deflect past Vomacka to end the shutout bid.
The Huskies were able to kill off a penalty with just over five minutes to play and won four of five face-offs down the final stretch to keep possession and not allow BC to pull their goalie for the extra attacker, sealing the win.
