Huskies Win New England Championships
2/1/2020 8:31:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn women's track and field team claimed victory at the 2020 New England Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies took the top spot with 125.33 points. Northeastern finished second with 111 points and UMass Amherst took third with 94.50 points.
"Today was a barn burner, there were three teams that could win it with four events to go. We just kept adding to our lead," said director of cross country and track & field Greg Roy. "I can't say enough about Mia Nahom and Danielle Jordan. They got our day off to an unbelievable start going one and two in the mile. They did their last yesterday in the distance medley as well."
The leadership of Nahom and Jordan got things started on day two of the meet for the Huskies. That spark pushed several Huskies to take top spots in the second day of events, leading UConn to victory.
"Mia on the anchor and Danielle is on leadoff, Elise O'Leary actually broke it open for us in the second leg of the 4x800. So that was a great job by them. Randi Burr in the 3k, just as things were tightening up, she ran a great race for us. Ayoola Gbolade was tough as nails in the 800, what a great race. Kristina Cherrington basically comes out of the training room and nearly wins the 500, which was huge. What a lift that was for us. Jiana Baker scored for us today and did a really great job. Shanelle Colmon in the 200, she was really great as well."
Roy was pleased with the preparation leading up to the meet and was very happy to see a great team effort all weekend.
"We talked at the beginning of the week and said keep lifting each other and pushing each other. This was a great meet and a great championship for the women this weekend."
