CLERMONT, Fla. – The UConn softball team closed out the final day of The Spring Games by knocking off the Purdue Boilermakers, 3-1, in an extra-inning thriller! The Huskies grab their first win over a Power Five opponent this season, improving to 8-2 on the season and pushing their win streak to seven games.
Reese Guevarra led the charge for UConn going 1-3 and scoring a run, Aziah James went 1-4 with a run, and Carli Cutler added a score of her own to round out the offensive leaders. Junior Marybeth Olson improved to 4-0 after delivering eight strikeouts in eight innings in the circle.
UConn broke through for the game's first run in the top of the first off Guevarra's first homerun of the season. The junior stepped up to the plate and knocked one into center field to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead and some early momentum.
After the Boilermakers knotted the game in the second, the teams went three up and three down through the ensuing five innings and headed into extra's tied 1-1.
Casazza began the eighth with a sac bunt advancing Cutler to third. No stranger to the moment this weekend, James was a star in the clutch once again. The sophomore stepped up to the plate and blasted a single through the right side that scored Cutler, caught the defense on their heels and stole second, then gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead after scoring off Olivia Sappington's single to right center a few plays later.
Olson and the UConn defense sealed the win with three quick outs, including a strikeout to end the game.
