Huskies Set For JMU Invitational

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team gears up for the JMU Invitational this weekend. The Huskies head to Harrisonburg, Va., for the three-day event (March 6-8) and will take on Cal, Siena and host James Madison.

The teams will play each other first in a round-robin format to determine seeding for a traditional tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

HUSKY BITES:

UConn is led by first-year head Coach Laura Valentino, who took over the helm in July. Valentino was most recently an assistant coach at Duke, which initiated its softball program prior to the 2018 season.
The Huskies come into the weekend with an 11-4 mark. UConn went 3-2 last weekend at the Capital Classic in California, picking up wins against Santa Clara (x2) and host Sacramento State. The team's two setbacks came to UC Davis, 3-2, and Saint Mary's, 6-5.
As a team, the Huskies have accounted for 115 hits, 86 runs, 75 RBI's, 22 doubles, six home runs and a .274 BA. Defensively, UConn has accumulated 94 strikeouts and limited its opponents to just 37 runs, 81 hits through 395 at-bats, and a .207 opponent batting average.
Junior infielder Briana Marcelino earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll. Marcelino paced UConn with a .429 average, six hits, four steals and eight runs scored during a 3-2 weekend at the Capital Classic. The Easton, Conn., native recorded two hits, including a home run, and added three RBI and a pair of runs against Santa Clara (Feb. 28), then scored twice the following day in UConn's second triumph over Santa Clara (Feb. 29) in as many days. Marcelino closed out the weekend notching two stolen bases and two more runs in the tournament finale at Sacramento State (March 1).
