STORRS, Conn. – Recent graduate and former UConn Women's Hockey player Catherine Crawley has been announced as a nominee for 2020 NCAA Women of the Year Award, as announced by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Award, rooted in Title IX, was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
A record 605 female college athletes were nominated by NCAA member schools for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Nominees for the award stem from all three divisions, featuring 259 nominees from Division I, 126 from Division II and 220 from Division III. Nominees competed in 24 sports, with multisport student-athletes accounting for 128 of the nominees.
A four-year letterwinner and an instrumental part of the UConn women's hockey team, Crawley was selected as an alternate captain by her teammates prior to the 2019-20 season. Through 39 games, the Washingtonville, N.Y., native notched 31 points on 15 goals and 16 assists, which ranked second and third on the team, respectively. Crawley completed her UConn career ranked eighth in points (83), ninth in goals (35) and tied for seventh in assists (48).
Crawley's impact wasn't just felt on the ice. She was selected as one of 13 nominees for the 2020 Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism. After earning the 2019 UConn Female Community Outreach Athlete of the Year award for initiating several service projects for student-athletes to take part in throughout the academic year, Crawley took home the 2020 UConn Female Kinsman Award for her excellence in academic and athletic achievement, leadership, service and character.
A 2018 Recipient of the NCAA Hockey East Student-Athlete Award and UConn Babbidge Scholarship, Crawley has also been a three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team selection and a four-time ACHA Division I All-American Scholar honoree.
Additionally, she was a mainstay on the Agriculture, Health & Natural Resources Dean's List since 2017, and has been named to the Director of Athletics Honor Roll in each term.
Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who compete in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be considered by a selection committee. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
