MADISON, Wisc. – The UConn women's cross-country team ran at the 2021 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon, finishing 22nd as a team in the 37-team field at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
"Today was a solid learning experience," stated head coach Lindsay Crevoiserat. "Twenty-one ranked teams were in the field out of 37 and learning how to race with this deep of a field takes experience! This is our first time here, and I'm looking to keep bringing them back year after year to keep learning."
The Huskies ran in their first 6K race this fall in what is their final race tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship at the end of the month. UConn came into Friday's race ranked No. 26 in this week's USTFCCCA Top-30 national poll, while this year's race field featured 19 teams ranked in this week's national poll. New Mexico won the team title with 93 total points, finishing in front of No. 1 ranked NC State with 102 points.
"Our two seniors, Mia and Melissa ran strong and poised and we saw some great performances from them up front," commented Crevoiserat. "The younger squad is going to learn from this race. We finished 22nd, and there's a lot of room for potential from here when we get to a smaller field in a few weeks. THe BIG EAST race has five nationally ranked teams and We're ready to go to battle in a few weeks."
Senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) was the Huskies top-finisher on Friday, running the course in 20:48.8, her fastest 6k time since the 2019 NCAA Regional. She finished 41st overall in the field of 266 runners.
Senior Melissa Zammitti (Charlotte, N.C.) finished in 73rd posting a career-best time of 21:08.5. Freshman Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario) was next up for UConn, posting a time of 21:28.3 to finish 126th.
Rounding out the Huskies top-five finishers was sophomore Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) in 149th with a time of 21:39.0 and senior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) who ran a 21:44.8 and was 161st.
Next up for the Huskies will be the 2021 BIG EAST Championship on October 29 being hosted by Butler Univeristy.
