STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's cross-country team is on the way to Indiana for the 2021 BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP on Friday afternoon. The 11-team field will battle for the league crown at the Northview Church Course in Carmel, Ind.
The women's race will follow the men's field and will step off at 11:50 am. The race will be available to watch on FloSports.
The Huskies were edged out for the title by Georgetown, 46 to 48 points, at the championship race held last March due to the covid-19 pandemic. UConn had four runners in the top-10 at last year's race, with their top runners coming in fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth.
UConn has had great fall campaign with a pair of race wins and strong showings in two national races under their belts heading into the weekend. The Huskies ranked third in the latest USTFCCCA Northeast Regional poll and received votes in the National Poll this past week. The Huskies peaked at 22nd in the national poll earlier this season.
The Huskies are coming off a 22nd place finish in the 36-team field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational two weeks ago. UConn was led by senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, running the 6K in 20:48.8, her fastest time since the 2019 NCAA Regional. She finished 41st among 266 runners. Nahom was ninth at the BIG EAST Championship in the spring.  During her UConn career she has been an All-Conference finisher four times (BIG EAST 1; American 3) and was an NCAA Championship qualifier in 2019.
Classmate Melissa Zammitti (Charlotte, N.C.) will run at her first BIG EAST title race after coming to UConn from Cornell. She is coming off a career best 6K time at Nuttycombe with a time of 21:08.5.Â
Sophomore Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) was an All-BIG EAST runner at last year's championship with a sixth-place finish. She also ran a career best at the Wisconsin meet at 21:39.1.
Senior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) was the Huskies' top-finisher at last season's BIG EAST Championship, taking fifth, her highest finish at a conference championship race. Fellow senior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) has had strong fall running the Huskies' top-five consistently all season. She had a career-best 6K time at last year's BIG EAST race (21:13.2).
Sophomore Caroline Towle (Bedford, Mass.) and freshman Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario) come into the weekend with strong races on their resumes this fall. Towle is coming off her two fastest time of her young career. At the Wisconsin race, both Towle and Thomas recorded new personal best times on a 6K course.
Following Friday's conference championship, the Huskies will next race at the 2021 NCAA Regional Championship in Boston on November 12.
