CARMEL, Ind. - The UConn women's cross-country team finished third overall at the 2021 BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP with three Huskies earning All-BIG EAST honors at this year's race.
Rainy conditions all week produced a muddy course at the Northview Church Course for Friday's title race. The Huskies put in a gritty, tough performance to battle their way to a third-place finish and were within striking distance of the top spot for the second-straight season.Â
Senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.), fourth place, freshman Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario), seventh, and senior Melissa Zammitti (Charlotte, N.C.), 15th overall, were all named to the All-BIG EAST team.
UConn finished with 70 five points, just five points away from BIG EAST Champion Georgetown for the top spot. The Huskies were three points behind host Butler for the second spot. "We knew going in with five teams national ranked that being in top-three would be a great result but it still hurts being this close again," stated head cross country coach Lindsay Crevoiserat. "It really came down to that last K and who wanted it. I thought we showed a lot of toughness out there today." Â
"I thought we got out really well and were in the race the whole time," stated Crevoiserat. "It was a really close race the whole way, and going into that last K, we were essentially in fifth. I though we looked great down that stretch, everyone closed as hard as they could. We knew every point would count.  Mia held really strong and it was great to see Chloe grab a top-10 spot."Â
Nahom finished fourth overall in the field of 97 runners, crossing the finish line in a time of 21:00.0. It was the fifth time in her career at UConn that she garnered All-Conference honors at a cross country championship race.Â
Thomas claimed All-Conference accolades running in her first career BIG EAST Championship race. She finished seventh overall and posted a new career-best time in a 6K race, crossing the line in 21:06.9. Zammitti was also an all-conference finisher on Friday, clocking in at 21:26.6.
Rounding out the UConn top-five finishers was senior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) in 21st place overall with a time of 21:45.0 and Caroline Towle (Bedford, Mass.) in 23rd at 21:59.3, a new career-best 6K time.
Senior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) finished 25th overall at 22:09.0 and sophomore Jenna Zydanowicz (West Harford, Conn.) was 31st at 22:19.1 closing out the UConn lineup.
"Losing by two points last year, we were really wanted this," said Crevoiserat. "We are still very happy with our result today. This is one of top fields in the country, so this is a great result. Getting momentum into the NCAA Regional is really important and being right there today, that could definitely help us moving forward for the NCAA race."
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday, November 12 when they run at the NCAA Regional Championship in Boston.
