STORRS, Conn. – Contending against BIG EAST frontrunner Marquette, the UConn women's volleyball team won the opening set, but dropped the next three as it saw its seven-game Gampel Pavilion win streak snap Saturday afternoon.
UConn (14-7, 6-3 BIG EAST) took the early momentum until Marquette (18-3, 9-1 BIG EAST) fended off the Huskies to remain at the top of the conference standings.
Junior Jasmine Davis led the Huskies with 13 kills and 11 digs. Junior Allie Garland and senior Caylee Parker also reached double figures with 11 and 10 kills, and graduate student McKayla Wuensch provided a game-high 38 assists.
After a back-and-forth start, senior Kennadie Jake-Turner ripped a swing from the right side to spark 3-0 run, giving UConn a 12-11 edge. Following a 3-0 Golden Eagles spurt, sophomore Taylor Pannell got the offense back on track with back-to-back kills as a 9-3 run to put the Huskies back on top, 21-19. Garland and Panell sealed the set with two straight kills to give UConn the initial 1-0 advantage.
With it tied up at 4-4 in the second set, Jake-Turner swung two straight kills as the Huskies maintained the momentum and pull ahead, 11-7. Marquette ripped off a 9-3 run to tie it once again, 17-17, and capped the set an 8-2 run to even the match at the half.
The Golden Eagles maintained the momentum coming out of the break, hitting .500 in the third set to take their first overall lead.
Down 10-6 in the fourth frame, the Huskies responded with their own 4-0 streak, and two straight blocks from Davis and Jake-Turner tied it up at 10-all. Marquette started to pull away as it gripped a 19-14 command, but four straight errors got the Huskies back within striking distance. Parker sparked UConn with a pair of kills while Jake-Turner and Davis added their own to tie the set at 23-23. However, the comeback would end there as the Golden Eagles took the next two points to take the match.
The Huskies will return to Gampel Pavilion tomorrow for a 2 p.m. start vs. DePaul.
