Huskies Fall to Villanova in Extra Time

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team fell to Villanova in extra time on Wednesday night at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies fall to 4-4-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in conference play.
The Huskies had an early chance to take the lead in the 7th minute. Freshman Mateo Leveque's free kick found the head of senior Felix Metzler, whose effort was saved on the goal line by the Villanova goalkeeper. Majority of the play in the next 20 minutes was played in the middle third of the field, with both teams searching for a way through the opposition's defense.
Villanova's best chance came in the 35th minute, when a two-on-one developed after a turnover in UConn's defensive third. Graduate student Jahmali Waite was able to get down and make the stop, keeping the game level at 0-0. UConn had another chance in the final minute of the half as senior Dom Laws sent a cross into the box where freshman Giancarlo Vaccaro's effort went wide of the post. The teams would go into the half tied 0-0.
Metzler had the Huskies' first big opportunity of the second half in the 49th minute when his effort from 12 yards out went wide of the post. Jahmali Waite made his biggest save of the game in the 75th minute as Villanova found a way behind the Husky back line. The graduate student goalkeeper made a brilliant right foot save to keep the score tied. Metzler would get another opportunity in the 83rd minute when the midfielder cut the ball onto his left foot at the top of the box, but saw his shot get pushed wide for a corner.
Villanova was given a penalty in the 102nd minute that was converted to give the Wildcats the 1-0 victory.
