HARTFORD, Conn. – Boston University scored twice late in the third period to come away with a 2-1 win over the UConn Huskies Friday night at the XL Center in the Hockey East opener for both clubs.
UConn carried a 1-0 lead into the final period but failed to capitalize on a pair of power play chances, including a 5-on-3, to extend their lead as the Terriers would come up with a rally late. UConn grad student Darion Hanson (East Bethel, MN) stopped 43 shots in goal for the Huskies, who fall to 1-1-0 on the young season.
Junior Vladislav Firstov (Yaroslavl, Russia) gave UConn a 1-0 lead just 5:04 into the first period, using his speed to get to the front of the net for a slick goal, his third on the year. From there Hanson dug in and made 19 saves in the first and 11 in the second to keep BU at bay heading to the third.
UConn opened the third period with a 5-on-3 chance and another full minute of a second power play but managed just two shots over that span as BU killed them off to keep it at 1-0. The Terriers found the equalizer at 14:20 as Sam Stevens was sitting right on the left post to poke one home.
Senior Carter Turnbull (Nanaimo, British Columbia) went to the box for boarding at 14:50 and the Terriers were able to capitalize as Robert Mastrosimone buried the game winner in the slot area off a rebound and through traffic. BU netminder Drew Commesso made 33 saves to earn the win.
The Huskies were 0-for-4 on the power play while BU finished 1-for-4 and held a 45-34 edge on shots.
The two teams will close out the weekend Hockey East series Saturday night at Aggains Arena. Opening face-off is slated for 7 pm.
1st Period:
The Huskies struck from the periods only goal as Firstov potted his third on the season at 5:04. Senior Jachym Kondelik (Budejovic, Czech Republic) chipped the puck off the boards to Firstov streaking into the neutral zone. The junior used his speed to beat the defense and get to the front of the net, putting one five-hole for a 1-0 lead.

The Terriers finally broke through on Hanson with just over five mintues to play in the third. Domenick Fensore coasted up the ice but was stopped by Hanson with the rebound kicking back to Stevens at the left post who tucked it in to tie it at 1-1 at 14:20.
After getting their fourth power play chance at 14:50, BU hit for the game winner at 16:03. Case McCarthy wound up for a big shot from the point and the rebound kicked in front where Wilmer Skoog backhanded the puck to Mastrosimone in the right circle who buried the rebound for a 2-1 lead.
